How is video file size calculated?
File size is the total bitrate multiplied by the duration: (video bitrate + audio bitrate) × length in seconds ÷ 8 gives the size in bytes. A 10-minute 1080p clip at 8 Mbps video and 192 kbps audio works out to roughly 600 MB.
What bitrate should I use for each resolution?
As a rough H.264 guide: 480p ≈ 2.5 Mbps, 720p ≈ 5 Mbps, 1080p ≈ 8 Mbps, 1440p ≈ 16 Mbps, and 4K ≈ 35 Mbps. Fast motion and detailed footage need more; simple talking-head video needs less.
Why is my actual export a different size?
Most exports use variable bitrate, which adapts to the content, so quiet or static scenes use less data than the constant-bitrate estimate. Newer codecs like H.265 and AV1 also produce much smaller files at the same quality.
Will this video fit in an email or upload limit?
Compare the estimate against your destination's limit — most email caps at 20–25 MB, so all but the shortest clips need a link instead. Use the attachment checker and transfer time calculator to plan the delivery.
